38 Year Old Teacher Dies of Flu After Not Being Able To Afford Co-Pay

    A Texas teacher who died from complications of the flu had planned to pick up flu medication but she could not afford the copay.

    Heather Holland, 38, died Sunday after falling ill about a week ago, the Weatherford Democrat reports.

    Husband Frank Holland says Heather wanted to purchase Tamiflu but the $116 charge was too much for them to afford, he told the Wall Street Journal.

    The husband says her condition worsened on Friday and she was put in the ICU.

    “The doctors got the blood cultures back and they had to put her on dialysis early Saturday,” Frank Holland told the Weatherford Democrat.

    Heather died Sunday morning.

    She was described as a passionate teacher that had been with the Weatherford school district for the last four years.

    “She loved helping people, helping the kids, and the kids loved her,” Holland says.

    Counselors were on the school’s campus on Monday and will be throughout the week to assist parents, students and staff, the Weatherford Democrat reports.

    “This is a sad time for our WISD family, especially for those who knew Mrs. Holland as a friend and colleague. Heather was an outstanding educator. She had been a member of the Ikard family since 2014 and touched the lives of many students, parents, and staff members.
